Welcome to Year 1 St. Thomas a Becket Class Page
Our Adults: Miss Clarke and Miss McCarthy
Welcome to Year 1!
Please read with your child every night and complete an activity in their reading journal about the book they have read. Your child will not change their book until the activity has been completed and they have read with an adult. These activities are best completed with adult guidance. Every Friday the children will be assigned a maths game on activelearn which links to the learning they have been doing in class that week. If you do not have your login please just ask!
Every child has the first 100 high frequency words in their reading journal please practice these with your child (this can be practiced verbally with an adult or written in their journal).
There are 6 phonics phases. In Year 1 we will be tested at the beginning of the Summer Term on phases 2-5. We will have to read some real and some alien (nonsense) words using the sounds we have learnt. Please practice the sounds with your child at home. There are some great free phonics games on phonicsplay.co.uk or alternatively for help with the pronunciation of sounds Mr Thorne does phonics on youtube is very helpful.

Today it was really snowing! We worked in teams to build snowmen. We had to gather all of the snow and then find eyes, ears, arms, a nose and a mouth! We did really good team work.
Making owl nests!
Today we went on a trip to the park! We collected lots of twigs and soft leaves so we could build our very own owl nests. We know owls don’t make their own nests they like to steal them from other birds or live in holes in trees, so if we wanted owls to move in we had to get making.
We went to the Green Man Community Centre to make pizzas. Sherene the chef taught us how to make them from scratch, we had to roll the dough, cook the sauce and add all of our toppings.
